Red, Blue, Ginger and Tumeric Oh My!
Self Care Winter Tips
I have had a few asks recently to share about me, which if you know me is not my comfort zone!
Since I am always challenging you to see things from a different perspective, or learn new skills that are not comfortable at first, here I go...
I am sharing my winter self care tips!
As a parent coach I often talk about self care. Self care is an important aspect of parenting. We need to feel comfortable knowing and acknowledging our own needs if we are going to teach our children how to do that. My hope is that we can change the way our society views women, parents and moms who are finding balance and taking care of themselves! We need to support each other in doing this, cheer each other on and encourage each other so that we create a generation of kids who know their needs and take care of themselves and moms that do the same!
When we take care of our own nervous system and our own bodies it allows us to show up for our kids!
My self care is not a massage (although love those) it is daily/weekly things I do to take care of me and my nervous system. Some of them take minutes and are little ways I show myself love so that I can feel and do my best. I have created a routine around them and it does evolve and change a bit with the seasons.
I love these little acts of love because they are not your "typical" self care tips. I wanted to share to show you that what you do to take care of yourself does not have to be seen in a spa, it can, the whole idea is to create a rhythm that works for you and your body.
I have always had autoimmune diseases and there have been times in my life that they took over. I could not do or be the person I wanted to because I was sick and tired. I was just getting through the day and scraping by. These shifts have been over years of working with doctors, homeopathic practitioners, research and most of all listening to my body! I am still working on being the healthiest version of myself and some of these things may change and evolve as I do!
What's on my self care list?
- Light Therapy- first thing in the am. I drink a glass of water and let it soak into my eyes. Living in upstate NY there isn't much sunlight and none when I first get up. The research is clear on the benefits of light first thing in the morning. It helps with circadian rhythms, balance of hormones and mood!
- I make a vitamin boost that I take a shot of in the morning. I juice it and keep it all in a mason jar. It has orange, lemon, ginger and tumeric. It helps reduce inflammation which is the root of most disease and disorders. It helps with immunity and gut health! Tumeric and ginger are powerful foods! It helps with reducing inflammation, helping with infections of digestive tract, improves liver detoxification and has show beneficial in prevention of disease.
- I drink a huge amount of lemon, ginger, turmeric tea. Again the health benefits are amazing and I love the soothing taste and the warmth especially in the colder months. It is like drinking a blanket of hugs!
- I practice yoga 3-5 times per week. I practice from 10-20 min a day in my home with youtube! I love it. It makes me feel great, mentally and physically. I always set and intention ( I am BIG on mindbody work), I practice deep breathing for my nervous system and my muscles thank me!
- I walk outside 4-6 days per week. Sometimes in my pjs! I put snow pants over whatever I am wearing and when I have a half hour in my day I go! I bundle up and grab headphone, its all by my back door, so what I have the time (which varies day to day) I put on all my winter gear and head out for fresh air and whatever sunshine I can find!
- Gua Sha Face Tool- I use it for the lymphatic drainage benefits and the muscle tension benefits! It also helps with circulation, fine lines and reduce inflammation! I slather some organic olive oil on my face, use the stone and enjoy some deep breaths!
- Red Light Therapy- YUP! I have a panel, my daughter has a mask and we love and see the benefits of this! I feel like this definitely helps reduce inflammation, get the blood flowing and helps with healing.
- Chiropractic Care- This has been a game changer for me. It has helped me feel better, helped with posture and deep aches and pains but also clearer mind! I do cranial adjustments because I had a lot of discomfort around my ears and sinuses. This time every other week is something I feel ahs helped so much in my overall feeling well.
- Magnesium Foot Soak- this one is on and off over the years! When I can at night when I have 10 minutes to sit and if I do, I try to do this! Magnesium has so many benefits! This feels luxurious and magnesium helps with healthy muscles, nerves, bones and blood sugar levels. It has been found helpful for assisting in relaxing and for headaches as well.
