Let go of perfection and teach resilience in your children!

 Resilience....

The ability to overcome life's obstacles and stressors.  Seems so simple and easy but man is this hard!

Seems like everyone is so reactive lately and I guess it makes sense,  we did just get out of a pandemic and the world seems like a bit of a hot mess! As parents we have a lot on our plate! As a working mom of three children, one with medical needs, I totally hear you!

We are trying to raise amazing humans in a different time than our parents! With technology, a pandemic, rising prices and both parents working the landscape of families and how to parent certainly has changed. What has not changed, is no matter what, our children need us to be there for them emotionally and physically.  Our children are relying on us to step up to the plate and figure out how to navigate this new dynamic and be resilient ourselves so that we can teach them HOW to life!

So What Can We Do?

No one is a perfect parent! So connection to your children is so very important! As parents we are going to mess up! That is ok! When you do, go back and acknowledge your actions/words and reconnect to your kids! Teach them how to do this very hard and critical life skill of reconnecting and then problem solving and learning a new skill!  That is reliance, it is learning HOW to get through the messy middle, the struggles and the hard times in life and in relationships!

Tips for Resilience:

  • Practice self care and self compassion- show your kids how to take care of themselves and start with the easy stuff. Get plenty of rest, eat well, be active and listen to your body! When you don't practice self compassion, what is your inner dialog and what do you say out loud in front on your children?
  • Stay Connected- relationships and connections matter! They matter for you and your kids and they take effort and work!
  • Set Goals- have bigger things to work towards! Teach your kids how to set goals and work towards them. Focus on the process NOT the outcome and learn how to learn!
  • Practice gratitude and giving back- This is KEY, what you see and tell your brain you will see. Make an effort to see the positive, it is a practice and the more you do this the easier this becomes!
  • Seek support if you need it- ask for help, that is a true sign of strength when you can admit that you need something more and you go find it!

Doing better always starts with ourselves!

The only thing we can control in life is ourselves, and one great thing about parenting is if we do the work to see where our own blindspots are and model self compassion, self regulation and repair our kids will learn it too!

Just by working on ourselves we can make the world a better place and create resiliency in our kids!

Be that positive and stable influence your kids need, that is not perfection, that is showing up even when we are not perfect and learning new skills if we need to!
