Setting your kids up for success...How Parent Coaching Can Help!
When I would imagine what type of parent I wanted to be, I envisioned all the fun things we could do as a family. All the gatherings, picnics, outside play, baking and cooking. I romanticized parenting to be nothing but magical!
When I became a teacher... things got real, the vision shifted. I started to get a glimpse of reality but my vision of my own parenting journey was still romanticized, the "I will never do that when I am a parent" voice still strong in my head!
Then I became a mother and things shifted even more. How am I supposed to have a picnic when it takes 4 hours (maybe a bit of an exaggeration) to make lunch and get the kids ready to go outside, set up the blanket and carry the food out! What was the point of carrying the food outside when I could feed then inside? I felt like I was making things harder for no good reason, I stared to feel overwhelmed when my expectations and reality were not aligned and started to let what I wanted fade way and focus on what was convenient.
I eventually took a step back and realized that I WANTED to do those things with my kids and while it might not look like the dreamy scenario I had imaged when I was younger, I knew I could find a way. I thought about what I could do that would allow me to have these experiences with my children and not feel overwhelmed. I valued these things as a parent and wanted to find a way, even if it wasn't easy or took a bit of extra planning.
So what did I do?
First, I used practices I learned while earning my special education degree and my experience working with families. Then I sat down and honed into my natural talent for over analyzing and problem solving. We all have a natural talent in us that we need to embrace to create harmony and connection.
I created rhythms for my household and expectations, not just for me but for the entire family!
Having a schedule, expectations and being on the same page helped us immensely.
We sat down and got real. We started family meetings...Yes even with little kids!
We grew together as a family and I was able to have my vision of parenting begin to become my reality.
I started to make some goals about what type of family environment I wanted to raise my little humans in and made a plan to get there.
It wasn't easy but it worked and now 20+ years later I feel happy and content with my parenting journey so far. Of course there were bumps in the road. Nothing is perfect, but that is why we communicate and grow together.
I learned a lot during that time with my own children and I am still learning today. Each child is different and parenting one child may be completely different than another. I continued to grow through education and certification as a parent coach.
Today I continue to work on myself and my parenting. Parenting and self growth, to me, are a never ending journey. Helping other parents create rhythms and routines for their homes and families is a huge passion of mine. I know the feeling of wanting to parent a certain way but feeling too overwhelmed to do so. I want to help parents feel more confident and secure in their own parenting while building a solid foundation for their kids. I have helped many parents focus on building a relationship, self and co- regulation, communication and teaching skills out of the moment that will support your parenting vision!
So how do we start? Your first step is to book a free consultation call with me where we get to know each other a little bit better. While many practices are similar across the board, it is important to take into account your family on individual basis. The next step is making a clear plan based on your specific goals and current routine. We talk about obtainable goals and shifts that help you and your child on a daily basis. I will coach you with dialog that helps you in the moment and we will build skills out of the moment. We will discover what is holding you back from being the parent you want to be. These include things such as mindset, old beliefs that are no longer serving you and so much more that gets in the way of you feeling good about your parenting journey. Together we come up with a game plan that is realistic and obtainable.
This is just a glimpse into the process. I believe that Parent Coaching will help parents, grandparents and caretakers and is one of the best investments you can make for yourself, the well being of your family and children's future.
