Some great reads on Autism and Sensory Processing...

We talk about sensory information and "stimming" behaviors a lot in sessions, especially if you have a child who has been diagnosed with Autism..

Here is a great article that explains what it FEELS like from the perspective of adults who have autism...

I found it on The Mighty written by Melissa McGlensey

I have had a lot of parents ask "what is sensory processing?"

this article explains it... (found on understood.org)

It is often why in  therapy we only give one piece at a time to minimize visual input, or why a child functions better when there is less going on around them...they are able to focus and take in information and organize it.  We all probably can relate....how many times do you need one box of cereal and walk down the ENTIRE isle dedicated to cereal and can't make a decision??

It is so important to understand a childs' perspective, and what their actions are communicating to us, especially if they are non verbal. It is critical information so that we can help organize an environment where all kids can be successful, it's what they all want!
